What is Positive Discipline?

Positive Discipline and Montessori are like two peas in a pod! Dr. Montessori’s methodology relies heavily on the freedom of choice, the encouragement of independence, and the prepared learning environment. All of these vital concepts are also at the foundation of Positive Discipline.

Here at Waseca, we practice Positive Discipline. It is a philosophy and practice officially published by Jane Nelson, and based on the work of Alfred Adler and Rudolf Dreikurs. It is designed with the true meaning of discipline at its root: “to teach” the children how to become responsible and respectful members of society.

Positive discipline relies on approaching children with a lot of kindness and compassion, while also maintaining those healthy boundaries that help children understand their limits. We want to emphasize the child’s autonomy by providing choices, while also teaching them valuable life skills like social and natural consequences, problem-solving, accountability, confidence, and cooperation.
